The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis — the thin, resilient sheet that stands between the living skin beneath and the outside world. Though it is only tens of micrometers thick, it does the front-line work of the skin barrier: holding water inside the body and keeping irritants, allergens, and microbes out. The classic way to picture it is a brick wall. The bricks are corneocytes, flattened skin cells that have lost their nuclei and filled with a tough protein called keratin. How thick is the stratum corneum?
