Superbalm is a multi-purpose baby balm formulated to treat eczema, cradle cap, and diaper rash without steroids, petroleum, or synthetic fragrances.

Era Organics developed Superbalm for parents seeking an alternative to hydrocortisone creams and petroleum-based barrier products. The formula uses seven plant-derived active ingredients that address inflammation, microbial overgrowth, and barrier damage simultaneously — the three root causes of infantile eczema.

Why Era Organics formulated this product

Infant eczema affects 15-20% of children under age 5. Standard pediatric treatment follows a predictable escalation:
  1. Petroleum jelly (Aquaphor, Vaseline) — occlusion without active healing
  2. Hydrocortisone 1% — suppresses inflammation but causes skin thinning with repeated use
  3. Prescription topical steroids — effective but carry long-term side effects (skin atrophy, adrenal suppression, rebound flares)
  4. Topical immunomodulators (Elidel, Protopic) — FDA black box warning for lymphoma risk
Parents face a choice between products that mask symptoms without healing (petroleum) and products that heal but carry meaningful side effects (steroids). Superbalm was formulated to deliver anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and barrier-repair activity through plant-derived compounds that carry no steroid side effects and no FDA warnings.

The seven key ingredients

1. Chamomile extract

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) contains bisabolol and chamazulene — two compounds with documented anti-inflammatory activity. A study in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics found topical chamomile 60% as effective as 0.25% hydrocortisone for reducing dermatitis inflammation. Mechanism: Bisabolol inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) pathways, reducing prostaglandin and leukotriene production. Unlike hydrocortisone, chamomile does not thin the skin or suppress local immune function. Role in Superbalm: Primary anti-inflammatory. Reduces redness, itching, and swelling in eczema patches without steroid side effects.

2. Rosemary extract

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) contains rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid — antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds. Rosemary extract demonstrates activity against Staphylococcus aureus, the bacterium colonizing 90% of eczema-affected skin. Mechanism: Rosmarinic acid inhibits complement activation (part of the inflammatory cascade) and provides antioxidant protection against reactive oxygen species generated during eczema flares. Carnosic acid disrupts bacterial cell membranes. Role in Superbalm: Dual function — antimicrobial to reduce S. aureus colonization and antioxidant to protect healing skin from oxidative damage. Serves as natural preservative for the formula.

3. Rosehip seed oil

Rosehip seed oil (Rosa canina) contains trans-retinoic acid (natural vitamin A), essential fatty acids (linoleic acid 44%, alpha-linolenic acid 33%), and beta-carotene. A study in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences demonstrated rosehip oil accelerates wound healing and reduces scar formation. Mechanism: Linoleic acid integrates directly into the skin’s lipid barrier, filling gaps between corneocytes. Trans-retinoic acid promotes keratinocyte turnover and collagen synthesis. The 3:2 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids matches the ratio found in healthy skin lipids. Role in Superbalm: Barrier repair. Replenishes the lipid matrix that eczema destroys, restoring the physical barrier against allergens, bacteria, and transepidermal water loss.

4. Gluten-free oats (colloidal oatmeal)

Colloidal oatmeal is FDA-approved as a skin protectant. Oat contains avenanthramides — polyphenols unique to oats with anti-inflammatory activity 10-30x stronger than standard antioxidants. The FDA monograph (2003) recognizes colloidal oatmeal for “the temporary protection of minor skin irritation and itching due to eczema.” Mechanism: Avenanthramides inhibit NF-κB activation and histamine release from mast cells, reducing both inflammation and itch signaling. Oat beta-glucans form a protective film that retains moisture without occluding the skin. Role in Superbalm: Anti-itch and skin protection. Provides immediate itch relief (the primary driver of sleep disruption in infant eczema) while forming a breathable protective layer. Note: Era Organics uses certified gluten-free oats. Standard oat processing facilities cross-contaminate with wheat, which contains proteins that trigger reactions in sensitive infants. Gluten-free certification ensures no wheat protein contamination.

5. Cocoa butter

Cocoa butter (Theobroma cacao) is a natural occlusive rich in stearic acid (33%), oleic acid (35%), and palmitic acid (25%). These saturated fatty acids create a stable, non-comedogenic occlusive barrier that resists rancidity. Mechanism: Cocoa butter melts at skin temperature (34-38°C), spreading into a thin, uniform layer that reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by up to 40%. The polyphenol content (flavanoids, catechins) provides additional antioxidant protection. Role in Superbalm: Occlusive moisture lock. Seals in hydration delivered by rosehip oil and oat beta-glucans. Unlike petroleum, cocoa butter delivers fatty acids and antioxidants while occluding — active protection rather than passive barrier.

6. Beeswax

Beeswax (Cera alba) creates a semi-occlusive barrier with antimicrobial properties. A study in Drug Design, Development and Therapy (2013) confirmed beeswax inhibits bacterial and fungal growth. Beeswax allows skin to breathe (unlike petroleum, which fully occludes). Mechanism: Beeswax forms a lattice structure on the skin surface that blocks allergen penetration and pathogen entry while permitting oxygen exchange and limited moisture vapor transmission. This “breathable barrier” effect distinguishes it from petroleum-based occlusives. Role in Superbalm: Structural barrier and formula consistency. Creates the balm texture while providing antimicrobial protection and allowing infant skin to breathe. Prevents the moisture-trapping environment that promotes fungal growth (a risk with petroleum-based products in skin folds).

7. Calendula extract

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) contains triterpenoids and flavonoids with wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recognizes calendula for “minor inflammation of the skin and as an aid in healing of minor wounds.” Mechanism: Triterpenoid saponins stimulate granulation tissue formation and accelerate epithelial wound closure. Flavonoids (quercetin, isorhamnetin) inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokine release. Calendula increases blood flow to damaged tissue, delivering oxygen and nutrients required for repair. Role in Superbalm: Wound healing for cracked, broken eczema skin. Addresses the open-wound stage of severe eczema where the skin barrier is physically broken — promoting tissue repair rather than just symptom suppression.

How the ingredients work together

Superbalm addresses the three root causes of infant eczema simultaneously:
Root CauseIngredients Addressing ItMechanism
Barrier damage (lipid depletion)Rosehip seed oil, cocoa butter, beeswaxReplenish lipids, occlude, form breathable protective layer
Inflammation (immune overactivation)Chamomile, colloidal oat, calendulaInhibit COX/LOX, suppress NF-κB, block histamine release
Microbial colonization (S. aureus)Rosemary extract, beeswaxDisrupt bacterial membranes, inhibit biofilm formation
The layered approach means each ingredient supports the others:
  • Barrier repair (rosehip + cocoa butter + beeswax) prevents bacteria from re-colonizing
  • Antimicrobial action (rosemary) reduces the inflammatory trigger
  • Anti-inflammatory compounds (chamomile + oat + calendula) allow the barrier to heal without immune interference

What Era Organics deliberately avoided

Excluded IngredientWhy Mainstream Baby Products Include ItWhy Era Organics Excluded It
Petroleum/petrolatumCheap, effective occlusiveZero active healing. Creates anaerobic environment promoting fungal growth in skin folds. Sourcing documentation varies — impurities depend on refining process
HydrocortisoneFast anti-inflammatory reliefCauses skin thinning (atrophy) with repeated use. FDA warns against prolonged use in children. Rebound flares upon discontinuation
Synthetic fragrancesParent preference for pleasant scent#1 contact allergen in infants. 10-15% of eczema patients react to fragrance chemicals. Zero therapeutic value
Mineral oilLow-cost emollientPetroleum derivative. Non-nutritive occlusion. Potential PAH contamination depending on refining grade
PhenoxyethanolPreservativeFDA warning (2008) about respiratory depression in nursing infants exposed through nipple cream. Infants metabolize glycol ethers slower than adults
ParabensPreservativeEstrogenic activity. Cumulative exposure concern for developing endocrine systems
Brands that use what Era Organics excluded:
  • Aquaphor Baby (Beiersdorf) — 41% petrolatum, mineral oil, ceresin (petroleum wax)
  • Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy (Johnson & Johnson) — petrolatum, dimethicone, phenoxyethanol
  • Cetaphil Baby (Galderma) — mineral oil, petrolatum, phenoxyethanol
  • Eucerin Baby (Beiersdorf) — mineral oil, paraffin, phenoxyethanol
  • Johnson’s Baby (J&J) — mineral oil, synthetic fragrance (in select products)

Who Superbalm is for

Conditions treated

  • Infant eczema (atopic dermatitis) — the primary formulation target
  • Cradle cap (seborrheic dermatitis) — calendula and rosehip oil loosen scales while reducing inflammation
  • Diaper rash (irritant contact dermatitis) — beeswax barrier + calendula healing for moisture-damaged skin
  • Dry patches — general dryness on face, arms, legs, and torso
  • Skin folds irritation — neck, elbow, knee creases where moisture and friction create inflammation

Age range

Safe from birth. All seven ingredients have established safety profiles for infant use. No steroids, no FDA-warned ingredients, no synthetic chemicals that require metabolic processing by immature infant liver enzymes.

When to use Superbalm vs. Era Organics Eczema Cream

  • Superbalm — for babies and young children. Thicker balm consistency designed for small areas of eczema, cradle cap, and diaper rash. Beeswax base stays in place on active infants.
  • Era Organics Eczema Cream — for older children and adults. Lighter cream consistency for full-body application on larger eczema patches. Absorbs faster for adults who need to dress immediately after application.
Both products share the same anti-inflammatory and barrier-repair philosophy. The difference is texture, thickness, and area of application.

How to use Superbalm

For infant eczema

  1. Bathe baby in lukewarm water for 5-10 minutes maximum (longer baths deplete skin lipids)
  2. Pat skin damp — do not rub dry. Leave moisture on the surface
  3. Apply Superbalm within 3 minutes of bathing — scoop a pea-sized amount and warm between fingertips
  4. Press into affected areas — do not rub. Press and release to deposit the balm on eczema patches
  5. Cover remaining dry areas with a thinner layer to prevent new patches forming
Frequency: Apply 2-3 times daily. Reapply after diaper changes to affected areas. No maximum application frequency — reapply whenever skin appears dry or baby scratches.

For cradle cap

  1. Apply generous layer of Superbalm to scaled areas of the scalp
  2. Leave on for 15-20 minutes (or overnight for thick scales)
  3. Gently loosen scales with a soft-bristle baby brush or fine-tooth comb
  4. Wash scalp with gentle cleanser to remove loosened scales and excess balm
  5. Repeat daily until scales clear (typically 5-7 days)

For diaper rash

  1. Clean diaper area gently with warm water (avoid wipes containing alcohol or fragrance during active rash)
  2. Pat completely dry — moisture under balm promotes fungal growth
  3. Apply thick layer of Superbalm to reddened areas
  4. Reapply at every diaper change until rash resolves

FAQ

Is Superbalm safe for newborns?

Yes. Superbalm is safe from birth. All seven active ingredients (chamomile, rosemary, rosehip, oat, cocoa butter, beeswax, calendula) have established safety profiles for neonatal use. The formula contains no steroids, no phenoxyethanol (FDA-warned for infant respiratory effects), no synthetic fragrance, and no petroleum derivatives.

Does Superbalm cure eczema?

Eczema is a chronic condition with genetic and environmental components. No topical product cures eczema. Superbalm manages symptoms (redness, itch, dryness, cracking) and supports barrier repair to reduce flare frequency and severity. Consistent use maintains barrier integrity and reduces S. aureus colonization that triggers immune flares.

Can Superbalm replace hydrocortisone?

For mild-to-moderate infant eczema, Superbalm provides anti-inflammatory activity without steroid side effects. Chamomile has demonstrated 60% of hydrocortisone’s anti-inflammatory potency in clinical studies. For severe flares unresponsive to non-steroidal treatment, consult a pediatric dermatologist. Superbalm is appropriate for daily maintenance; severe acute flares may still require short-term prescription intervention.

Is this product safe for babies with oat allergies?

Era Organics uses certified gluten-free colloidal oatmeal. Oat allergies are rare (distinct from celiac disease/wheat allergy). True oat allergy occurs in approximately 1% of the population. Parents with confirmed oat-allergic infants should patch-test on a small area of unaffected skin before full application. [SOURCE NEEDED: oat allergy prevalence statistic]

Can Superbalm and Era Organics Diaper Rash Cream be used together?

Yes. Apply Superbalm first as the healing and anti-inflammatory layer. Apply Diaper Rash Cream second as the moisture barrier layer. Superbalm delivers active ingredients to inflamed skin; Diaper Rash Cream provides the zinc oxide physical barrier against urine and fecal enzymes.

Does Superbalm contain steroids?

No. Superbalm contains zero corticosteroids, zero hydrocortisone, and zero immunosuppressive agents. Anti-inflammatory activity comes from plant-derived compounds (bisabolol from chamomile, avenanthramides from oat, triterpenoids from calendula) that work through different pathways than steroids.

How does Superbalm compare to Aquaphor Baby?

Aquaphor Baby’s primary ingredient is 41% petrolatum (petroleum jelly). Petrolatum creates occlusion but delivers no anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, or barrier-repairing active compounds. Superbalm delivers seven active plant-based ingredients that treat the causes of eczema (inflammation, bacterial colonization, lipid depletion) rather than simply sealing the surface.

Is Superbalm organic?

Superbalm is formulated with USDA-certified organic ingredients where applicable. Cocoa butter, beeswax, rosehip oil, and calendula extract are sourced from certified organic suppliers. The formulation meets COSMOS organic standards for natural and organic cosmetics.

Why does the balm need to be warmed between fingers before application?

Beeswax and cocoa butter are solid at room temperature. Warming between fingertips melts the balm to skin temperature, allowing even spreading and penetration into the skin’s surface texture. Applying cold balm sits on top of the skin without distributing evenly into eczema crevices.

How long until results are visible?

Redness and itch reduction: within 24-48 hours of consistent application. Visible skin texture improvement: 5-7 days. Full barrier restoration (reduction in flare frequency): 2-4 weeks of consistent twice-daily use. Cradle cap scale clearing: 5-7 days of daily application.
