What are dead skin cells?

Dead skin cells are expired keratinocytes that accumulate on the outermost layer of the skin. Their defining attributes are straightforward: their age (how long since the cell died), their keratin composition (they are packed with the tough protein keratin), and their surface location on the very top of the skin. In biological terms they are a type of cellular waste — the spent end-product of a cell’s life cycle rather than a living, working cell. Skincare writing tends to use several names for the same thing, and they are worth knowing: the technical term is corneocytes, the shedding-in-progress version is called desquamated cells, and the everyday word most people reach for is simply skin flakes. All three describe the same flattened, protein-filled cells sitting at the surface. These cells are old. A keratinocyte begins deep in the epidermis, matures as it rises, and by the time it reaches the top it has lost its nucleus and become a hardened shell. That is what makes a corneocyte a corneocyte: it is defined by age and by location. Its surface position matters because the very outside of the skin is where dead cells collect, overlap, and eventually flake away — and where a scrub can reach them.

What dead skin cells are made of

A dead skin cell is not empty. Its component parts are keratin, a set of cell lipids, and the corneocyte envelope — a tough protein casing that replaces the ordinary cell membrane during maturation. The keratin content is the dominant feature: each corneocyte is packed with keratin filaments, which is why the outer skin feels firm and slightly rough rather than soft. So while it is common to talk about a buildup of dead skin as if it were simple debris, each flake is a structured little package of protein and lipid. Those dead corneocytes belong to a specific place — they make up the outer skin layer, the horny layer at the very top of the epidermis. Normally the body clears them on its own. How dead cells differ from living skin cells

The contrast worth drawing is between dead skin cells and the live skin cells beneath them. Live keratinocytes — the new keratinocytes forming at the base of the epidermis — have a nucleus, divide, and do metabolic work. Corneocytes do none of that; they are the finished, inert version. This is why sloughing dead skin cells from the top is not the same as damaging the skin: you are lifting away spent cellular waste while the living, dividing cells stay safely below.
