Hypochlorous acid is a reactive oxygen species (an oxidant molecule) that white blood cells produce to neutralize pathogens and reduce inflammatory signaling at wound sites. Sun exposure can leave skin feeling hot, tight, and red, and a light mist of 0.02% hypochlorous acid on those areas helps soothe and comfort the skin’s surface. The Era Organics HOCL formula lists just three ingredients: water, sodium chloride, and hypochlorous acid at 0.02%. Hypochlorous acid spray for sun-stressed skin is a soothing, comforting mist for skin that feels hot or tight after time outdoors. Sunburned and windburned skin shares the same surface-level discomfort, and the mist helps soothe and comfort skin that looks red and feels irritated. The skin spray delivers this active at a 0.02% concentration in a fragrance-free formula made for soothing the skin’s surface. Supporting this anti-inflammatory profile, Hon et al., found that a four-week, twice-weekly regimen of diluted sodium hypochlorite (bleach) baths reduced topical corticosteroid use by a mean difference of 1.1 ± 2.6 days/week (p = 0) among all 40 patients who completed the trial; sodium hypochlorite is the oxidized chlorine compound most closely related to hypochlorous acid in the bleach-bath literature (Hon et al., The Journal of Dermatological Treatment, 2016). The face mist contains no fragrances, drying alcohols, or synthetic dyes, which matters for sun-damaged skin because those additives compound sensitivity on an already-compromised barrier. Applying 1–2 sprays to clean, dry skin and allowing the HOCL to dry completely before layering any moisturizer or balm gives the hypochlorous acid unobstructed contact with the irritated surface. The formula is paraben-free and phenoxyethanol-free, removing two additional chemical classes that sting on inflamed skin. The study cited on this page does not test hypochlorous acid against UV-related sun damage, so no sun-damage study figures are given here; the ingredient science above rests on the established biochemistry of hypochlorous acid as an endogenous anti-inflammatory oxidant and on the product’s listed 0.02% HOCL concentration. For this concern, Era Organics offers the hypochlorous acid face and body mist. The Era Organics HOCl mist layers into a daily skincare routine. Key ingredients:
