Methylene Blue and Mitochondrial Health and Cellular Energy

Methylene blue is a compound with a long history in laboratory science. In recent years, researchers have taken an interest in how it interacts with the parts of cells that produce energy. This page explains, at a research level, why that interest exists. It does not describe a benefit, and nothing here is a claim about any product. Era Organics’ methylene blue is sold for research and diagnostic purposes only, and how it is used is up to the individual, best under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider.

Why mitochondria come up in this research

Mitochondria are small structures inside cells that generate most of a cell’s usable energy, stored as a molecule called ATP. They make ATP through a series of steps known as the electron transport chain, where electrons are passed along like a relay to drive energy production. Researchers study methylene blue in this context because, in laboratory settings, it can carry electrons. A study by Lee and colleagues, published in Hepatology in 2015, reported that methylene blue can act as an alternative electron carrier within the mitochondrial electron transport chain. In plain terms, that means it may shuttle electrons through part of the chain, a mechanism scientists find worth investigating. This is a description of how the compound behaves in study conditions, not a statement about what any product does in a person.

What the research actually shows

The work here is early. Much of it comes from laboratory or animal studies, and the findings are preliminary rather than settled. Scientists describe potential mechanisms and directions for further study, not established outcomes in people. The interest in methylene blue as a topic, sometimes discussed under the broad category of a methylene blue supplement, reflects open questions, not proven effects. To be clear: this is not a benefit of this product, and none of this is evidence that this product boosts energy, improves mitochondria, or does anything at all. It describes research interest in the compound itself. In its own writing on the topic, Era Organics notes that “Methylene blue has been cited in over 200 studies for health benefits including mitochondrial health, energy production, brain health, mood support, inflammation, longevity and cellular health.” That framing of research areas is laid out in its material on what methylene blue is studied for, written as educational reading rather than a promise of results. You can learn more about the specific formulation on the hub page for Era Organics Activated Methylene Blue 1% Drops.

About the compound in this product

The Era Organics formulation uses USP pharmaceutical-grade methylene blue at a minimum of 99.99% purity, dosed at 1% (roughly 0.5 mg per drop), and it is third-party tested. It also contains colloidal gold, ionic fulvic-acid minerals, and vitamin C in a base of glycerin and distilled water. These are descriptions of the material, not claims about what it will do. Era Organics makes the same point in its own material on the compound, noting that “Methylene Blue is a salt used as a dye, supplement, and medication.” That background is traced further in its writeup on what methylene blue is.

Safety

Methylene blue can act as an MAOI and carries a risk of serotonin syndrome when combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs; it is not for use during pregnancy or nursing, should be avoided with G6PD deficiency, and must be kept away from children. Era Organics states in its own safety writing that “Methylene Blue interacts dangerously with various medications that affect serotonin levels in the brain,” and it walks through those cautions in more depth in its material on methylene blue side effects.
