What are plant oils in skincare?

Plant oils are a kind of natural oil pressed from seeds, nuts, and fruits, and they bring fatty acids, antioxidants, and soothing compounds to the skin. You will see them labeled as botanical oils or vegetable oils too, all names for the same lipids drawn from plants. In eczema care they act as emollients that seal the surface and add back lipids. A review of natural oils for skin-barrier repair describes how many of these oils carry antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-itch properties, making them attractive topical options.

Not every oil behaves the same way, which is why formulation matters. Era Organics’ Baby Eczema Superbalm blends several complementary oils rather than relying on any single one.

What makes one plant oil different from another

A few measurable traits set plant oils apart. The most important is fatty acid composition, which varies by source: coconut, sunflower, and avocado each carry a different balance of fatty acids, and that balance decides how well an oil matches and rebuilds the skin’s own lipids. The next is viscosity, how thick or runny the oil is, which shapes whether it feels light and fast-absorbing or rich and sealing. The third is extraction method, cold-pressed, steam-distilled, or solvent-extracted, since how an oil is pulled from the plant affects how gentle and intact its compounds are. Cold-pressed oils, for instance, keep more of their natural antioxidants. Weighing fatty acid composition, viscosity, and extraction method is how a formulator picks oils that soothe rather than sit heavy or irritate.

Why oil choice matters

Some plant oils strengthen the barrier while others can disrupt it, so the specific oils in a balm make a difference. A review of natural oils for moisturization looked at coconut and sunflower seed oil favorably for atopic dermatitis and dry skin in children, while cautioning that olive oil may worsen the barrier.

Superbalm leans on the barrier-friendly oils. Coconut oil, avocado oil, and sunflower oil carry the fatty acids that are studied for supporting a leaky skin surface, while cocoa butter and beeswax help seal everything in. These nourishing plant oils are chosen for what they add, not just for sealing.

Plant oils versus synthetic and petroleum bases

Botanical oils stand apart from the two main alternatives: synthetic emollients and petroleum-based oils. Synthetic emollients are lab-made ingredients such as silicones that cap the surface without contributing any of the skin’s own lipids, and petroleum-based oils like mineral oil and petrolatum are refined from crude oil to do the same purely occlusive job. Both can slow water loss, but neither brings the fatty acids, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds that vegetable oils carry into the mix. That contrast is the reason a plant-based balm exists: to seal the barrier with oils that also feed it, rather than with an inert synthetic or a petroleum derivative. For families who want to keep those off a baby’s skin, the choice of botanical oils over synthetic or petroleum bases is the whole point.

Plant oils in Superbalm

In Superbalm, plant oils form the emollient base, softening and sealing the skin alongside botanicals like chamomile, calendula, and gluten-free oats. Choosing oils studied for eczema-prone skin, rather than a generic base, is part of the balm’s design. The formula is mineral-oil-free and silicone-free, so its oils are botanical rather than mineral oil or silicone.

These oils are the natural emollients in the balm’s base. For the full formula and uses, see the Baby Eczema Superbalm reference.

Frequently asked questions about plant oils

Are plant oils good for eczema?

Many plant oils, including coconut and sunflower seed oil, are studied as gentle emollients for eczema-prone skin, though results vary by oil. Superbalm pairs oils like coconut and sunflower with gluten-free oats, chamomile, and calendula.

How are plant oils different from mineral oil?

Plant oils, or botanical oils, are pressed from seeds, nuts, and fruits and carry fatty acids and antioxidants, while mineral oil is a petroleum-based oil that seals without adding those compounds. Both slow water loss; only the plant oils feed the barrier as they seal.

Which plant oils does Superbalm use?

Superbalm’s oils include coconut, avocado, and sunflower oils, plus cocoa butter and beeswax. It is USDA Organic certified and cruelty-free.

Can plant oils replace a moisturizer?

Plant oils are a form of emollient moisturizing, and in a balm they seal and soften the skin. For eczema-prone skin, Superbalm combines them with oats, chamomile, and calendula in a balm that temporarily protects and helps relieve itch and irritation.
