# Zinc Oxide in Era Organics Diaper Rash Cream

> Zinc oxide is in diaper rash cream because it is the only FDA-recognized over-the-counter active ingredient approved to treat and prevent diaper rash.

Zinc oxide is in diaper rash cream because it is the only FDA-recognized over-the-counter active ingredient approved to treat and prevent diaper rash. The mineral is a physical barrier, sitting on top of the skin to seal out moisture, urine, and stool before they reach the already-irritated surface. Era Organics Diaper Rash Cream delivers it at 10% — the concentration at which the FDA classifies it as an effective skin protectant.

Clinical data on zinc oxide in diaper rash specifically shows measurable improvement in moisture loss through the skin (transepidermal water loss) (TEWL). A comparative clinical study found the zinc oxide side recorded lower mean TEWL values than the untreated control side on day one of application (Wananukul et al., Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand, 2006). Lower TEWL means the skin barrier is losing less water, a direct signal that zinc oxide is reinforcing the compromised skin surface rather than simply coating it.

The Zinc Diaper Balm carries the zinc oxide in a base of organic plant oils and beeswax rather than petroleum or mineral oil. That base matters because zinc oxide needs to stay in contact with the skin through a full diaper cycle. Beeswax, cocoa butter, and shea butter give the Baby Comfort Cream its dense, stay-in-place texture, so the active ingredient remains where it was applied instead of wiping away at the first shift in the diaper.
