## What is sebum?

Sebum is the natural oil produced by sebaceous glands that lubricates the skin and can accumulate in pores. It is a type of skin secretion — the body's own oily output, not something applied from outside. Across skincare writing the same substance goes by a few names: the plain-language term is skin oil, the location-specific version is facial oil, and the technical label is sebaceous secretion. All three point to the waxy, lipid-rich film that keeps the surface supple.

Sebum is defined by what it is made of. Its main component parts are fatty acids, wax esters, and squalene, along with smaller amounts of other lipids. That mix gives sebum its slightly greasy, spreadable consistency — thicker than water, thinner than a solid wax — which is exactly what allows it to coat the surface and travel up and out through the follicle. ## Where sebum comes from and where it goes
