## What is desquamation?

Desquamation is the normal shedding of dead corneocytes from the outermost layer of the skin. It is one stage of cell turnover — the tail end of the renewal cycle, where cells that have finished their journey finally release from the surface. Because it describes that quiet, continuous release, desquamation is also called skin shedding, corneocyte shedding, or natural sloughing, and the four terms all point to the same everyday event: spent surface cells detaching and drifting away so newer ones can take their place. It happens invisibly, one cell at a time, across the whole surface of healthy skin.

The desquamation process has three moving parts: corneocyte release, enzyme cleavage, and surface flaking. Corneocytes are the flat, keratin-filled dead cells that make up the very top of the skin.
